Historic Lawrence Township, New Jersey, is renowned for its diversity and natural beauty. The township was founded in 1697as "Maidenhead," so named by the early Quaker settlers after a Thames River village later incorporated into the City of London. Originally Maidenhead was part of Burlington County and the state of West Jersey. In 1714, the Township became part of the newly-constituted Hunterdon County.

In 1838, Mercer County was formed from parts of Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Burlington Counties. Mercer County's historical impact reaches back to the pivotal battles of the American Revolutionary War. On the night of December 25, 1776, General George Washington led the American forces across the Delaware River to attack Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey, who did not anticipate an attack on Christmas Day. Washington followed up the assault with a surprise attack on General Charles Cornwallis' forces in the Battle of Princeton on the eve of January 2, 1777, eventually retaking the colony. These successful attacks built morale among the pro-independence colonists and rekindled hope for eventual victory.

Lawrence Township was legally incorporated through an act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1798. In 1816, following the most recent victory over British forces (War of 1812), the municipality was renamed Lawrence, after Captain James Lawrence, commander of the frigate USS Chesapeake and one of the newest naval heroes of the young nation. Lawrence is best known for his dying command of "Don't Give up the Ship."
